On Monday I limbed enough of the trunk of the hemlock to buck off 4 logs. The butt log I cut at 9′ because the butt cut wasn’t very square, then the next 3 logs were cut at 8 1/2′ long. In doing those apparently I twisted my left hip the wrong way and that night I needed to use a cane to help manage the pain. Then I hung low yesterday, the pain was mostly gone but I felt an extra day might be better.
This morning I have my 16 yr old grandson coming to help for a few hours, likely 3-4 hrs. He helps when not busy with school, work or sports. He’s on the High School varsity baseball team and has a game today, so he’s only available until 2:00 at the latest.
The plan for today is to have him, using the tractor with the forks on the front, pick up the limbs and haul them into the woods and dump them in a brush pile. While he does that, I’ll limb the rest of the trunk, decide if I want to cut 1 more 8.5 ft log and then have him haul the rest to the bruch pile. Critters will live in it for a few years.
If we finish that and have time left, I’ll get out the bigger chainsaw and buck up the trunk of the large sugar maple I had to remove because it started leaning towards the sugarhouse. I’d like to get that all cut, time will tell, if my arthritic hip starts bothering me, I’ll call it quits, open up my easy chair and just coach him. I’ll post later to let you know how it went.
